The first symposium in France on the history of vehicle manufacturers in Lyon took place on Friday, May 23, 2025. The audience comprised 85 attendees interested in Lyon's heritage or industrial history, including knowledgeable enthusiasts, representatives from institutions, self-taught individuals, heirs, and experts from the extended family of vehicle manufacturers in the Lyon region.
A resounding success for a first event: more information
Enlightened enthusiasts, institutional representatives, self-taught individuals, heirs, or experts of the extended family of vehicle manufacturers in the Lyon region, pre-register for the 2nd symposium on the history of vehicle manufacturers in Lyon, scheduled for Friday, April 24, 2026:
The entire 3A-Historique team was on hand to provide information about defunct Lyon manufacturers and their work in preserving their history. They displayed two Rhonyx 500cc motorcycles produced in Lyon, a rare Follis racing motorcycle with a Gnome Rhône engine, and a Follis barchetta equipped with a Ferrari V12.
A space was also dedicated to SLHADA, the Lyon Society for the History of Aviation and Aeronautical Documentation, based at Fort Bron, which served as a reminder that Lyon was also a center of aviation, beginning in 1874.
3A-Historique's ongoing research was illustrated by an online map and a printed map of 70 selected manufacturers, of which over 600 copies were distributed.
Founded by a number of car enthusiasts, Les Amateurs d'Automobiles Anciennes association was the starting point for the preservation of vintage vehicles. It set an example in France and abroad thanks to its originality, being the first to organize exhibitions, friendly outings and rallies of all kinds. Its aims are as follows:
- Vidéo Yves Coeurdray - Les 3A -
In the second half of the 19th century, a large industrial region characterized by the diversity of its sectors took shape around Lyon, which appeared to be an ideal location for visionary business owners, eager to modernize industry with ever more effective innovations: Guimet blue, Jacquard looms, the automobile, etc.
When, in 1894, he decided to set up what was to become Lyon's first automobile company, Maurice Audibert chose the Monplaisir district, then very popular with business owners for its proximity to the Guillotière suburb and its large available spaces. In 1896 he joined forces with Émile Lavirotte. they are joined by other car manufacturers all eager to show that at that time "Lyon was always two cylinders ahead of Paris". Thus, in 1914, all the big names in Lyon automobile manufacturing were established in the Monplaisir district, on either side of the Heyrieux road which then constituted the main axis of the district.
More than sixty vehicle brands of greater or lesser importance, and as many automobile car body designer, were born in Lyon. It seemed interesting to us to make available to the general public on the Internet an updated list of all the industrialists, manufacturers, constructors, mechanics, craftsmen, car body designer, inventors who have built touring, luxury, sports, racing cars, and carts, cyclecars, quadricycles, tricars, industrial vehicles, motorcycles, cycles, boats, amphibians, planes, engines, mechanical accessories, etc. in our city.
There already exist reference works on the history of vehicles in Lyon such as La Grande Aventure automobile lyonnaise, by Pierre-Lucien Pouzet, or the articles Les Bulletins de la Société d'Histoire Rive Gauche, by Lucien Loreille.
But none of these are based on a complete scientific study of the sources and until today no website has referenced the entire history of the Lyon's vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, cycles, boats, planes, car body designer, engine manufacturers, mechanical accessories manufacturers, subcontractors) with access to online archives. It is the scientific and new project, quite ambitious, that we have for the 3A, which should be the collector and guardian of the memory of the Lyon's automobile.
Only the 3A association has the reputation and legitimacy for such work. In addition, it seemed logical to us to associate it with the provision of archives, documented and validated by the 3A to trace history using the sources.
